Overview:
Woodworking Foundations is a hands-on course designed to help high school students build practical skills, confidence, and pride in creating something with their own hands. Over 14 weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of woodworking in a safe, encouraging, small-class environment. No previous experience is required.
Students will practice measuring, marking, drilling, joinery, assembly, sanding, finishing, and basic project planning as they complete several useful woodworking projects. Possible projects include a phone stand, tool tote, small shelf, step stool, plant stand, and more. All lumber cuts will be completed by the instructor so students can focus on safely developing foundational building skills.
Skills Learned:
Follow essential workshop safety procedures
Identify basic wood types, materials, and hardware
Measure and mark wood accurately
Use drills, drivers, clamps, and other basic tools
Drill pilot holes and countersink screws
Practice pocket-hole joinery and simple glue-ups
Assemble projects carefully and securely
Read simple woodworking plans
Create a basic project plan and cut list
Sand, fill, and prepare wood for finishing
Install hardware and apply finishing techniques
Work independently through each stage of a project
Present completed projects and take pride in quality craftsmanship

*Families involved in this class will be asked to sign a code of conduct agreement so that they know there is an expectation to act responsibly during instruction at PPS.
Timeline
This class begins Sept. 2nd, 2026 and runs until Dec. 9th, 2026 . This class runs every Wednesday from 1-4pm with a class break (no school) the week of Nov. 25th for a total of 14 classes.
