Overview

Students will explore the science of heredity through real-life investigations and living laboratory examples from humans, plants, fungi, and animals. Through models, observations, experiments, and genetic problem-solving, students will discover how traits are inherited, how cells reproduce, and how genetic variations occur.

Skills learned:

  • Explain how traits are passed from parents to offspring

  • Solve monohybrid and dihybrid Mendelian genetics problems

  • Identify dominant and recessive traits

  • Understand codominance and X-linked inheritance

  • Explore somatic inheritance

  • Distinguish between haploid and diploid organisms and cells

  • Compare the processes and purposes of mitosis and meiosis

  • Understand how genetic mutations occur

  • Analyze genetic patterns using Punnett squares

  • Compare inheritance across humans, plants, fungi, and animals

  • Record observations and interpret laboratory results

  • Apply scientific reasoning to genetics-based questions

Class Expectations

*Families involved in this class will be asked to sign a code of conduct agreement so that they know there is an expectation to act responsibly during instruction at PPS.

Timeline

This class begins Sept. 2nd, 2026 and runs until Dec. 9th, 2026 . This class runs every Wednesday from 930am-1020am with a class break (no school) the week of Nov. 25th for a total of 14 classes.
