*This listing is for students who are interested in attending the Journey West: An Oregon Trail Adventure class only. If you have already enrolled your student in the Epic Day for 2nd-5th Graders, then there is no need to purchase this option.
Overview:
Journey West invites students to explore pioneer life, the Oregon Trail, and America’s westward movement through hands-on history. Students will create an interactive pioneer lap book while learning about covered wagons, trail supplies, family roles, frontier tools, weather, sickness, river crossings, and the challenges of settling new land.
The class will also include creative projects and pioneer-style activities, such as building a paper covered wagon, planning a wagon supply list, making simple foods like butter and hardtack, and playing an Oregon Trail-inspired journey game.
In this class, kids will:
Explain why pioneers traveled west
Identify major features of the Oregon Trail
Describe daily life for pioneer families
Compare the roles of men, women, and children
Recognize common tools, supplies, wagons, and animals
Understand dangers such as illness, storms, and river crossings
Explain how pioneers built cabins and sod houses
Plan and prioritize supplies for a long journey
Follow simple pioneer recipes and food-making methods
Organize information in an interactive notebook
Practice problem-solving and decision-making
Build historical understanding through art, games, and hands-on projects

*Families involved in this class will be asked to sign a code of conduct agreement so that they know there is an expectation to act responsibly during instruction at PPS.
Timeline
This class begins Sept. 1st, 2026, and runs until Dec. 8th, 2026. This class runs every Tuesday from 930am-1020am with a class break (no school) the week of Nov. 23rd for a total of 14 classes.
